Online driver instruction

Online driver instruction enhances standard procedures

Driver training is a standard procedure for companies that own a fleet of vehicles. If employees are on the road in company vehicles, they must be trained in the safe handling of the vehicles. Companies are legally obliged to provide this instruction before the first journey and then annually thereafter. However, due to the lack of variety and repetitive content, these briefings run the risk of being labeled as a necessary and little-noticed evil. But that doesn’t have to be the case: We at skillbest have developed an online driver training course that can solve this problem in an e-learning way. Online driver training saves time and human resources. In addition, the e-learning version is more interactive and therefore more exciting for the employees to be instructed. The integration of related topics such as logbooks, expense reports, etc. makes online driver training a holistic tool that can have an impact beyond fleet management.

Initial situation digitization

The problem

Driver training is not one of the most exciting aspects of everyday working life, but it is required by law. Especially if the instructions are bought in as ready-made mass courses, there is a great risk that employees will only pay half-hearted attention to the content. One option would be to hold the training sessions as face-to-face events. However, this requires a much greater use of resources. Multiple locations and an international workforce complicate this process.

skillpractice

The solution

At skillbest, we have made it our mission to turn standard procedures into genuine learning experiences with added value for learners and companies. Our online driver training is an ideal example of this. The online driver training integrates central e-learning factors such as interactivity or storytelling and keeps learner motivation constantly high. We adapt the content to the respective company, the vehicle fleet and the needs of the employees. We also take advantage of opportunities that mass courses leave behind and, if desired, link online driver training with other important company processes such as logbooks or expense reports.

Areas of application
  • Annual driver training
  • Accident prevention regulations
  • Preparation for business trips
  • Onboarding processes
Advantages
  • Saves time and personnel resources
  • Keeps attention high through interactivity and storytelling
  • Adapts to company-specific content
  • Integrates other subject areas (e.g. expense reports)
Interactive vehicle control

Car check before setting off

If a business trip is imminent, it is necessary to check the condition of the company vehicle before setting off. This concerns very basic things such as tire pressure, brakes or fluid levels and is essential with regard to later defects or insurance claims. As part of our online driver training, employees are made aware of the need for such a car check. With the help of interactive elements and suitable images, the relevant content is anchored in the memory in a fun way.

Guided instructions

Interactive trainers

Learners are more focused when people address them directly and ask them questions. In our online driver training course, we simulate such an approach with the help of interactive trainers. The likeable questioners accompany the learners throughout the entire instruction and ensure that the online driver instruction is perceived as a coherent story and is followed with focus.

Inspection of electrical systems

Playful light check

Checking electrical systems is often forgotten, but it is important to be able to set off on a business trip safely. To make employees aware of this topic, our online driver training works with playful elements. Unlike conventional driver training, learners do not have to struggle with boring blocks of text or pictures, but check the headlights by comparing them and clicking correctly.

It is clear to us that instructions can and must be more than just boring digital manuals.

What do you think of digital training in general?

In my opinion, digital instruction is a mandatory part of the repertoire of e-learning courses in companies. Unfortunately, very little attention is paid to them and, accordingly, very little budget is allocated to them. In most cases, employment law instructions are provided in PDF or PowerPoint format. The added value is limited.

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for digital instruction?

On the one hand, they can convey important labor law topics in such a way that they are well received by the learners. On the other hand, digital training such as our online driver training can be easily linked to other relevant topics. For example, the procedure for expense claims or the correct way to keep a logbook can be included in the online driver training. It is important to always get the respective departments for which the training is relevant on board and to respond to their needs.

Should face-to-face training be completely replaced by digital instruction?

No, hands-on is always important. Especially if it is a first-time instruction, a face-to-face event makes perfect sense. However, for regular training sessions where knowledge needs to be refreshed, we recommend the use of interactive e-learning courses. These save time and personnel resources and can convey content accurately.
