In-house driver training
HABAU GROUP
Safety is a top priority in the construction sector – and not just on the construction site. Even when driving to customers, employees have to pay attention to a number of things in order to get themselves and their load safely to their destination. For this reason, construction companies must complete training for in-house driver training for light commercial vehicles every five years. For companies like the HABAU GROUP with around 6,700 employees, this represents an enormous effort. Together with skillbest, the HABAU GROUP has now developed an innovative approach to make the mandatory training more efficient and effective: Employees refresh their knowledge of light commercial vehicles with an e-learning course. Safety-relevant basics are thus internalized regardless of time and location.

Modular system
In order to ensure that the knowledge packages are internalized in the best possible way and do not overwhelm participants, the learning content for the in-house driver’s license has been divided into three modules. These can be completed independently of each other. Module 1 is dedicated to vehicle use. In an interactive scenario, participants complete the necessary documents and checklists and check whether their construction site vehicle is roadworthy. Module 2 deals with the transportation of hazardous goods and the safe storage of acetylene or oxygen cylinders, for example. Module 3 focuses on load safety, familiarizes trainees with important calculations and raises awareness of safe transport from the company to the construction site.
Simulated learning
Simulated everyday working life
Employees in the construction sector are exposed to many stimuli every day, have to constantly keep an eye on safety and perform strenuous tasks. This leaves few mental resources for dry learning content. That’s why we rely on storytelling and interactivity in our e-learning course on in-house driving licenses for light commercial vehicles. In all three modules, participants experience situations from their day-to-day work. Together with Peter and Flo, they get into a construction site vehicle and set off for the construction site. All kinds of safety-related situations await them on the way, which they have to solve. These small interactive knowledge packs motivate employees to refresh their knowledge before or after a day on the construction site.
Interview with Roswitha Friedl
- Why is training for in-house driving licenses for light commercial vehicles predestined for e-learning?
On the one hand, the content must be repeated every five years, and on the other hand, it generally does not change much. The use, transportation of dangerous goods or load safety will remain identical for the next few years. By moving this content into the digital space, we are reducing the workload for us as a company and making the mandatory training content more attractive for participants.
- Do employees even feel like engaging with learning content after a busy day?
That is precisely the advantage of e-learning: the content can, but does not have to be completed after work. Employees can learn independently of time and place and use quieter moments to repeat safety-relevant topics. This freedom has a positive effect on learning success.
- In your opinion, what is the greatest strength of the digital solution?
I would like to emphasize two points here: The first concerns the simulation of everyday working life. The story about Peter and Flo, two colleagues, could actually take place like this. Employees feel involved and motivated to follow the story. The e-learning is also geared towards interactivity. Learners are not in a passive role, but have to actively do something in order to make progress.
- What did you like about working with skillbest?
Even though we are not in the textile sector, but in the construction sector, I am of the opinion: stick to your last. Our strengths lie in the technical area: we know what employees need, what content is central and how we can reach people with it. skillbest knows how to best bring all of this together and implement it in the best possible way, both technically and graphically. The collaboration was always uncomplicated and professional.
"Interactivity, storytelling and the flexibility to learn regardless of time and place motivate employees to engage with even dry learning content."

Advantages for learners
- Small knowledge packets
The modular system motivates rather than overwhelms.
- Flexibility
Employees can learn when they feel ready.
- Appealing visuals
The graphic and technical implementation makes dry learning content appealing.
- Professional dubbing
The entire e-learning is professionally set to music. This also appeals to auditory learners.
Everything safe?
Which belts should I use? Do I need anti-slip beams or would it be better to use an anti-slip mat? How do I create a load distribution plan? Questions like these can be answered interactively by the learners. In this way, safety-related knowledge is refreshed in a fun way.
What was that again?
Whether it’s before starting your journey, after work or in a quiet moment between shifts: Completing the e-learning course is not tied to time and place. In addition, more complex content, such as calculating weight, can be repeated as required. This creates lasting security.
