Compliance is boring and dry? Not at all. In our best practice, we show how compliance know-how is acquired with the help of storytelling.
Digital training
A journey through the world of compliance
Sales employee Hannah is already looking forward to her business trip to several countries. Flights and hotels have already been booked and meetings with international partners have been planned. Nothing stands in the way of the trip’s success – or does it? There are a few situations awaiting Hannah on site that will require her full compliance know-how. How will she answer an indiscreet question? What information will she disclose? Learners can answer these and other questions on Hannah’s behalf. In our best practice of digital compliance e-learning, we dust off the dry topic of compliance and send learners on an interactive business and knowledge journey.
Hi, I'm Hannah!
I am 32 years old and have been working as a sales manager for a large industrial group for five years. In my free time, I enjoy climbing and going to concerts. As an experienced communicator, I love being in contact with colleagues and like to be on social media. I am delighted that you are joining me on my business trip!
Other countries...
… other compliance cases. Our online training takes Hannah to various company locations. Everywhere there are different challenges waiting to be solved in line with her employer’s compliance regulations. This travel scenario guarantees variety and ensures that motivation to continue learning remains high. Would you like to add a module later? Then we simply visit another location. This means it can always be expanded despite the storytelling.

The problem
The topic of compliance is predestined for learning dilemmas: on the one hand, compliance is invaluable in the business world. Behaving in accordance with the rules and laws is inextricably linked to the economic success of a company. Misconduct is quickly sanctioned. At the same time, compliance issues are among the most unpopular learning topics. They are usually formulated in legal language and are correspondingly complex and unfortunately also dry. The motivation to deal with this important content is limited.
Skillpractice
The solution
In our e-learning solution, we have completely rethought compliance: instead of scrolling through text-heavy PDFs, learners become part of a story. They accompany sales employee Hannah on a business trip and find themselves in various situations that require compliance know-how. It is up to the learners to decide which challenge they want to take on first. They can decide for themselves which place on the map they want to go to. In addition to the motivating storytelling effect, such opportunities for choice and decision-making increase the willingness to learn in the long term.
A good story is worth a lot – but not everything. In our digital compliance training, it forms the framework for important theoretical content that compliance simply cannot do without. At each of Hannah’s stations, in addition to decision-making questions and conversation simulations, there are theory blocks that convey the relevant legal and/or internal company regulations. In Hannah’s case, for example, information is provided on how to deal with discriminatory comments or alcohol in specific cases. As such theoretical content varies from industry to industry, it can be adapted accordingly at any time in the online training.
After arriving, Hannah heads straight to the hotel to check in. But afterwards? Should she visit the company event first, meet her international colleagues or would she prefer to chat over a cup of coffee? Hannah, no, the apprentices have a choice! They decide for themselves which compliance case they want to focus on first. The minimap shows learners which locations still need to be visited, similar to a video game. Only when all stations have been visited and all compliance questions have been answered can the journey home begin.
Conversation simulation
Peter wants to know
Hannah meets international colleagues for a coffee. After all, informal meetings like this are a good way to build a network and strengthen working relationships. However, a few compliance pitfalls await at such meetings, as Hannah soon finds out. Her colleague Peter has heard that the company’s European site wants to strengthen its presence in another market. He now wants to know from Hannah whether there is anything to it. Conversations like these are taken from real compliance cases and are realistically depicted in the e-learning.
Make decisions
How does Hannah react?
As a leading sales manager, Hannah is naturally privy to the company’s expansion plans. But will she betray them? Can she tell Peter about the deal? Or should she answer kindly but firmly that she can’t tell him about it? What Hannah ultimately answers is up to the apprentices. In compliance-relevant situations, they are motivated to think about suitable answers. This not only strengthens their compliance know-how, but also their eloquence in future conversations.
Achievements and Easter Eggs
Everything done right!
And if not, individual content can be repeated at any time. Using the success indicator, learners can always see whether they have successfully completed Hannah’s journey through the world of compliance. And who knows, they may even have discovered an Easter egg or two on the way between the event, café and meeting location. To further boost motivation, humorous or quirky moments can be incorporated into the e-learning. This creates immersion and makes the story seem particularly authentic.
Hannah's story can be authentically adapted depending on the company!
Interview with Günther Veit
A provocative question: isn't there already enough compliance e-learning?
As compliance is an issue for every large company, there are of course countless compliance training courses. The problem with these offers, however, is that the learner perspective is rarely incorporated into the design and the training courses are usually nothing more than prettified PowerPoints with complex, sometimes legal texts. The motivation to engage intensively with them is limited. As a result, no sustainable compliance know-how can be built up.
How can compliance expertise be built up with the skillbest solution?
In our best practice, we have thought about compliance in a completely different way – namely from the perspective of the learners. Instead of being confronted with texts, they become an active part of a story. They have the choice of where they go first and which tasks they dedicate themselves to. At the individual stations, they are then familiarized with the corresponding theoretical content. This mixture of storytelling and theory transfer is a novelty in the compliance sector and this is precisely why it is so effective. Which story or which actors are chosen depends on the companies that are rethinking e-learning with us. Hannah is just one example of a possible implementation to better illustrate our e-didactic approach.
Is your digital compliance training really more cost-effective?
Simple “PowerPoint e-learnings” or videos that you create are of course cheaper. However, it is often ignored that these offers do not have the desired learning effect. Frustration with the quality of e-learning often leads to a direct aversion to the subject on the part of learners. It is not uncommon for compliance e-learnings to be regarded as the worst digital training courses in large companies. Ready-made e-learnings on compliance, which can be purchased in bulk, unfortunately often convey too much content and this is not appropriate for the company. Authenticity is an important factor in activating the willingness to learn. You should also compare the running costs of license solutions with one-off investments. In most cases, individual developments are cheaper after just a few years and e-learning is often active in the company for decades, especially when it comes to compliance topics. Individual development may be somewhat more expensive to purchase, but it can be fully adapted to the company’s corporate identity and ensures that content is better internalized. This compliance know-how is also reflected in monetary terms in the long term, for example when potentially damaging cases are prevented by trained employees. This e-learning is worth the trip!
