Job simulation with e-learning for delivery services

e-Learning job simulation for delivery services

The measures associated with the pandemic have led to a veritable delivery service boom. This has resulted in strong growth for the respective companies to this day, but has also brought challenges. New employees are constantly joining the company. The time to train them sufficiently is limited and precious. Nonetheless, adequate training is essential in order to be able to continue to offer the usual service. We at skillbest have taken this dilemma as our starting point and developed an e-didactic solution: a job simulation based on e-learning, tailored to delivery services.

Initial situation digitization

The problem

The delivery service idea is simple: you order something via an app, the restaurant prepares the order, a delivery service employee picks it up and delivers it on time. If you take a look behind the scenes of the delivery service, this seemingly simple path between ordering and delivery consists of many individual work steps and processes. All of these processes have to be spot on. And for them to work, employees need to be trained precisely. In times of rapid growth, when many newcomers join the company, these training phases can quickly become time-consuming and resource-intensive.

The solution

At skillbest, we have developed a solution that gets to the heart of this problem: with our e-learning formats, we turn tedious training phases into a virtual job simulation with added value. Instead of getting on a bike or behind the wheel, new delivery service employees first sit down in front of a computer and experience a working day with the help of e-learning. The job simulation accompanies the new employees through all the essential stages of their day-to-day work. Storytelling transforms the learning content into an interactive story with tasks that keep motivation high and ensure learning success.

Areas of application
  • Onboarding processes
  • Training and familiarization phases
  • Training on corporate culture and values
  • Application procedure
  • Change management
Advantages
  • Realistically depicts work processes
  • Provides practical preparation for the first use
  • Gives applicants an insight into everyday working life
  • Trains behavior in stressful situations
  • Creates a sense of togetherness
Receive the order

Checkpoint 1: The restaurant

Several challenges await at this first checkpoint. Delivery service employees are faced with questions such as: Which of the many orders is for me? Does the packaging size match what was ordered? Will the order be ready on time or do I have to report a delay? The virtual job simulation introduces learners to various problems that they will also encounter in their everyday working lives.

Delivering the order

Checkpoint 2: The breakdown on the road

The journey from the restaurant to your destination is not always without mishaps. Whether it’s a sat nav failure, a flat bike battery or a flat tire: The virtual job simulation also prepares employees for unforeseen situations. In this way, the right behavior in stressful situations is trained in a playful way and without any pressure. If such a breakdown then occurs in reality, employees know exactly what to do.

Arrived at the destination

Checkpoint 3: At the destination

Branched residential complexes, winding house entrances or buildings without a proper door sign: the destinations could not be more different. What should you do if the customer’s name is not on the intercom? What happens if the customer doesn’t open the door? The job simulation has deliberately built in such hurdles. Once trainees have completed the digital dry run, almost nothing can throw them off course in their day-to-day work.

Ongoing training costs time and money. Digitalization turns them into an automated routine!

Interview with Managing Director Gustav Philipp Vogl about the e-learning job simulation

What prompted you to develop this approach?

From conversations with customers, we know how resource-intensive training phases can be. It takes an incredible amount of time for newcomers to finally settle into their job. Our approach shows that it makes sense to digitize these training phases. With our e-learning job simulation, new employees experience a working day without any pressure. They get to know important work steps and are familiarized with unforeseen situations before they are actually deployed. This virtual dry training integrates new employees into the company more quickly and effectively and guarantees smooth processes.

Can the e-learning job simulation also be used in other areas?

Definitely. For example, it makes sense to integrate a slimmed-down version of the job simulation into job advertisements. This allows applicants to test whether they have the necessary skills for the job. This takes the pressure off the HR department, for example, as only people who have successfully completed the e-learning job simulation tend to apply.

For which companies is a virtual job simulation suitable?

An e-learning job simulation is a sustainable investment for those companies that are confronted with a high employee turnover and therefore often have to train new people. This means that scalability plays a decisive role here. For small companies with few employees, we recommend digital onboarding.
